Multitasking

I used to pride my self as being able to multitask.

Its a skill they say one learns as a parent. Till I discovered that all these “tasks ” that I am doing in numerous directions are all ‘half assed’. So I got thinking am I really able to multi task or is this something different all together.

When we multitask we cannot actually give 100% attention to the task at hand as we are jumping from task to task and anticipating the next task without actually being fully present or completing the task at hand.

When the Task A is being undertaken, the mind will jump to the next Task B, and so on C, D, E, F, G etc, and then keep coming back to A, B, C, D etc to make sure they are doing ok. This is akin to juggling. So in fact the quality suffers when not giving sufficient time or effort to one task at a time. So multitasking is not a skill, it is a survival strategy. I mean it helps when managing a household of kids, or dealing with a farm or at a restaurant serving customers, yet there is something that is lost.

That is the moment of presence and certainty as displayed with complete focus. It is only by being fully present in the moment of now, known as the ” now moment ” can we hope to accomplish any success or meaningful encounter with anyone. It is in fact in the moment of now do we actually widen our space time horizons and so then become more efficient and productive. Not by chasing time, but creating time.

Try not to multitask but focus on one thing at a time. It is in this focus that we expand the ability to do more tasks. Yet it is only through focus that we find the tasks that we truly love to do, as when we are multitasking, we actually do not love everything we are doing and buzz like bees in a flowering garden.

Through meditation we are able to learn the art of focus, presence and mindfulness.
( this is a practice I do daily. Stay tuned for more on courses that I teach on mindfulness presence to get more productive and efficient in life experiences)

I love you

  1. Makes sense
    To be in the moment
To feel complete in that moment it’s imp to be focused on each thing one at a time
    And to do it well
And connect with those around you
